Saving For Fun: Tembea Kenya
My friend works in the tourism industry. She has the ‘low-down’ on various rates to various Hotels and resorts in the country; it is her business to. In the course of the conversations I have with her, we often broach the subject of vacation costs and packages offered and all I do is nod to the sentiments and opinions that she has. In secret, I have an ear to the ground to the moment we get to the specific costs of a weekend trip, a massage package, barbecue or just a night out.
I fear I digressed from the topic of this particular post. Apparently, things are not as rushed during Easter and Christmas as they are in September. I hear my friend drop the word ‘Peak Season’ here and there in our conversations. Being the opportunist that I am, an idea cropped up in my head; how much would it cost to get my parent’s that weekend getaway that I have been planning to ever since I got my first pay cheque ? The Sarova group has special rates during Christmas and according to my friend, so do many other resorts.
As things stand, the cost of getting my parents that weekend package would be a mere Ksh. 40,000 only. (I am sure that at this point through the post you are wondering, if you don’t earn as much or even more than our MP’s, WHAT DO YOU MEAN ONLY???) I think not many of us grew up with the culture of vacations, or saving for them. During school holidays, we’d probably be in tuition and such. That dream get-away is totally attainable….if you save up for it, you wont even have to get back to messed up finances. Saving up for a vacation seems like it would result in delayed gratification but momma always said that anything good was worth waiting for.
